James Campbell has recently returned to Sydney from Chicago, USA, where he has lived for the last four years. In Chicago James was one of the region's most sought after trombonists and teachers, performing with all orchestras in the area, including the Chicago Symphony, Lyric Opera Orchestra, Milwaukee Symphony, Ravinia Festival Orchestra, Music of the Baroque, Chicago Philharmonic and the Elgin Symphony. He has worked with such conductors as Pierre Boulez, Sieji Ozawa, Christophe Eschenbach, Christophe Dohnyani Sir Andrew Davis and Leonard Slatkin. As a chamber musician James has performed with the Chicago Chamber Musicians, the Wisconsin Brass Quintet and in recital with Michael Mulcahy, Gail Williams, Charles Geyer, Barbara Butler and Gene Pokorny. Other career highlights include performing at the Grand Teton Music Festival and a 2002 Fellowship to the Tanglewood Music Centre. James has held positions as lecturer at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (2003-04), acting principal trombone of the Tasmanian Symphony in Australia (2001) and as faculty at the Music Institute of Chicago. He has also appeared regularly with the Sydney Symphony, West Australian Symphony and the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra. James is currently teaching at the Newcastle Conservatorium of Music, Sydney Grammar School and Ascham School. He has a Masters of Music from Northwestern
University where he studied with Michael Mulcahy and a Bachelor of
Music (Hons) from the Australian National University, and has also studied
privately with Jay Friedman, Charles Vernon, Joseph Alessi, Nitzan Haroz
and Steven Witzer. |
